Weddings by Season – Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter Wedding Flowers

So you have figured out your wedding date, an exciting, yet monumental task, but now you need to figure out what type of flowers would be appropriate based on the season. Did your blood pressure just increase? Take a deep breath; we’ve made it easy!

This helpful guide discusses flower options based on the 4 seasons.

Spring Weddings:
Spring is all about rebirth and renewal. To incorporate these ideas into your floral theme you can add greenery to create a “fresh, new” look. By using bright, bold greens you will really emphasize the colours in your flowers (look how vivacious the flowers appear when they are placed next to the greenery in the above bouquet).

Popular spring flowers include:
Tulips: Tulips, in general, are symbolic of fame and perfect love. While each individual colour has its own separate meaning like:

- Red tulips mean “believe me” and are a declaration of love.

- Cream tulips say “I will love you forever” (very fitting for a wedding, don’t you agree?).

Although each colour has specific meanings, use the colours that speak to you.

Daffodils: Daffodils symbolize rebirth and new beginnings, and have come to be virtually synonymous with spring. Daffodils are said to ensure happiness when displayed or given in groups.

- If you include only a single daffodil it is supposed to bring great misfortune (and no one wants that)

Calla Lilies: Calla lilies are symbolic of “magnificent beauty” as well as “marriage and purity”. This beautiful and elegant flower emphasizes its simplicity with this basic, yet beautiful, symbolism.

Summer Weddings:
The summer is a time of brilliance and beauty, so naturally summer weddings typically include bright, bold floral arrangements.

Planning a formal wedding? Try centerpieces that include tall vases overflowing with a mix of bold and deep-hued flowers to exude elegance and charm.

Want to keep it more casual? Carnations offer a great shape, and variety of colours. Keeping your arrangements simple, but will still create an eye-catching centerpiece or bouquet.

Having an outdoor wedding? Try centerpieces that are mason jars with one, or a handful, of daisies in each. Or you could even use potted plants as centerpieces, this way guests would have a party favour to take home with them at the end of the night.

Another helpful tip for summer brides is to create smaller hand-tied bouquets, rather than oversized bouquets. Smaller hand-tied bouquets will last longer in the heat on a hot summer day.

Popular summer flowers include:
Carnations: Carnations are found in a wide variety of colours and, as a result, they have a variety of meanings.

- White suggest pure love and good luck,

- Light red represent admiration,

- Dark red show deep love and affection,

- Pink represent a mother’s undying love

Hydrangeas: There is some debate over an official meaning about hydrangeas; some people connect it with vanity and boastfulness (perhaps reflecting on its abundance of petals and lavish, roundish shape), but others suggest that it represents anything that is sincerely heartfelt (perhaps the love for your partner?).

Fall Weddings:
The fall is a very popular time to get married, with 14% of weddings occurring in September alone, making it the most popular month for weddings. And as per usual, you have probably been advised to adhere to Mother Nature’s palate when it comes to fall weddings and include colours such as red, orange, brown, rust and yellow, but like previously discussed: rules are made to be broken. You don’t necessarily need to stick to these colours, but you will likely want to include some rich fall tones (they are so beautiful, how could you not?). Experiment and use whatever colours you desire, whether they align with Mother Nature’s autumn palate, bright and bold or pale pastels.

Popular fall flowers include:
Sunflowers: Sunflowers, with their open faces, represent the sun itself, and convey warmth and happiness, as well as adoration and longevity.

Gerberas: Gerbera daisies are the classic symbol of beauty and wonder, and can also mean things like:

- White represent purity and innocence,

- Red represent passion and love,

- Yellow promotes cheerfulness

- Pink shows appreciation.

Winter Weddings:

Winter weddings are quite different than any other season; a winter wedding is a great way to do something different and stand out from the typical weddings. If you are having a winter wedding, don’t be afraid to throw some colour into your floral displays, such as red. Red flowers are a great way to emphasize your love for your partner and it boldly stands out against your white winter wonderland. Or you can shy away from bold colours, and try using cream coloured flowers, incorporated with evergreen, pine branches or poinsettias.

Popular winter flowers include: Poinsettia: Poinsettias, also known as the Christmas flower, represent good cheer, success and are said to bring wishes of birth and celebration.

Camellias: Camellias in general represent devotion, gratitude, and loveliness, with each colour having a specific meaning.

- Pink mean “longing for you”,

- Red say “you are a flame in my heart”,

- White say “you are adorable”.

Roses: Roses have had symbolic meaning since their discovery.

- Red display love, passion, and desire, plus respect and courage,

- Pink denote happiness and gentleness,

- White reverence, innocence, and purity,

- Yellow promote friendship and joy,

- Orange represent power and enthusiasm.

Whatever colour you choose, roses denote positive and optimistic meanings.

Don’t forget that just because an idea or flower is commonly used in one way, you can always turn the idea into your own, by being creative and pushing the boundaries. Make your wedding decor however you want it.
