September is the most popular month to get married – September, the month when the leaves begin to change colours, and you need a sweater in the evenings. Autumn weddings tend to be influenced by the rich, bold colours of the changing leaves; Mother Nature seems to have a dominant role in these weddings. The wedding season of autumn is best known for its rich colours and striking contrasts that are complementary to what the season generally looks like. The same goes for autumn wedding flowers; golden yellow, orange and deep red are some of the major choices. Flowers that are bold and dynamic make great choices for your fall wedding.

Tying the knot this fall? Want to know what your choices are for the best wedding flowers? Here are the top ten flowers for autumn weddings:

BIRD OF PARADISE
The bird of paradise is an exotic flower that gives you one last glimmer at summertime. These exotic flowers have a green beak, orange and blue crest, and green leaves with a hint of silver. Birds of paradise are perfect for destination weddings, topical themed weddings or for decorating reception tables (they will give your reception a splash of colour). We recommend using these flowers in early autumn if you plan on focusing on a fall themed wedding since they are more tropical and do not play into Mother Nature’s natural colours as well as some other flowers may.

BOUVARDIA
Bouvardias are loose clusters of starlet flowers that are tubular in shape and have a faint sweet scent. These beautiful flowers are most popularly used in buttonholes, but they can also be used in low sitting centerpieces. Bouvardias can be found in white, yellow, pink, and red, making them ideal colours for a fall themed wedding.

CHRYSANTHEMUMS
Chrysanthemums are one of the most popular autumn flowers, although they are available year round, they grow during the fall season. These beautiful flowers come in a variety of sizes and colours, which makes them ideal for any type of wedding, and they can be used as fillers for floral arrangements or bridal bouquets. Don’t pass up the chance to add these stunning flowers to your wedding celebration.

DAHLIAS
Darling dahlias come in vibrant shades of yellow and red – ideal autumn wedding colours. With their multiple petals they can be a wonderful addition to your wedding as a centerpiece or floral arrangement.

DELPHINIUM
Delphiniums, a member of the buttercup family, are most popularly known to be blue, but you are also able to find this flower in gorgeous shades of pink and lilac. Delphiniums are perfect to use during a wedding reception to add height to table arrangement; they create a dramatic touch to your entire celebration.

GERBERA
Gerberas, like delphiniums, will create a dramatic and contemporary look for bouquets. They are available in over a hundred shades and colours, which makes them the most popular choice for autumn wedding since they can easily match any theme. It will not be difficult to decorate your wedding with this wonderful bloom.

HYDRANGEA
Another popular fall flower is hydrangeas. Hydrangeas have full blooms that come in gorgeous pastel shades such as soft white, pink, lilac, and light blue – soft white being the most popular for fall; pink, lilac, and light blue are more popular in the spring. Hydrangeas are great for creating table centerpieces, pedestal floral arrangements, as well as being used in the bridal bouquet.

ORCHID
If you want to add something exotic to your wedding then your best choice is to use outstanding orchids. These beautiful flowers are a staple at many weddings, where couples want to add an exquisite touch. Orchids come in either white or bright pink; they are stunning for modern table centerpieces, and bouquets.

PINK
Don’t let its name fool you, pinks come in other colours too – available in shades of pink to red. You can use these flowers to make beautiful round flower arrangements for the alter or for the bridal bouquet.

ROSE
The top ten autumn wedding flowers would not be complete without roses. Although it is not often associated with fall, you can use roses that are deep burgundy or yellow to add grace and beauty to your fall wedding, plus the strong message of romance and love.

When you are picking flowers for your wedding you should take plenty of time since flowers are some of the most important aspects of wedding decorations. Hopefully these ten flowers can provide some insight into what flowers are popular for autumn weddings.

So you have figured out your wedding date, an exciting, yet monumental task, but now you need to figure out what type of flowers would be appropriate based on the season. Did your blood pressure just go back up? No reason for it to, we’ve made it easy with this helpful guide for what flowers are “appropriate” for whichever season you have decided on. But, what if you don’t like any of the suggestions for that season? Well, if you don’t, remember that rules (and these are hardly rules; they are guidelines, at best) have always been made to be broken, so skip over the norm and create your own radiant wedding with your own personal flair. We offer some helpful tips and suggestions for the rule-worthy and the rule-less bride.

Spring Weddings:
You probably have always been told that if you have a spring wedding you are required, that it is written in stone, to use a pale colour scheme. Well this is in fact: WRONG. Sure, you may want to incorporate pale, Easter-egg colours into your wedding, or you may want to go for a more untraditional approach by selecting hues that are a few shades brighter than normal spring flowers. For instance, don’t be afraid to try hot pink, bright orange, or magenta; any of these colours would emphasize the boldness of any greenery you may have selected. Just imagine a pristine white dress surrounded by hot pink and bright orange flowers with a dazzling, deep green. It paints a pretty good imagine in my head (and if you are having trouble envisioning it then just look to your right at this gorgeous bouquet).

Spring is all about rebirth and renewal. To incorporate these ideas into your floral theme you can add greenery to create a “fresh, new” look. By using bright, bold greens you will really emphasize the colours in your flowers (look how vivacious the flowers appear when they are placed next to the greenery in the above bouquet).

Popular spring flowers include:
- Tulips: Tulips, in general, are symbolic of fame and perfect love, while each individual colour has its own separate meaning too. Red tulips mean “believe me” and are a declaration of love. Variegated tulips mean “you have the most beautiful eyes”. Yellow tulips mean “there is sunshine in your smile”, and cream coloured tulips mean “I will love you forever” (very fitting for a wedding, don’t you agree?). Although these colours all seem to have very specific meanings, don’t be afraid to use whatever colour you want if it is what appeals to you. Be fearless, throw caution to the wind, and select any colour you want! (Like previously said, these are only guidelines, so take them all with a grain of salt).

-Daffodils: Daffodils symbolize rebirth and new beginnings, and have come to be virtually synonymous with spring. Daffodils are said to ensure happiness, but only when displayed or given in a bunch – if you include only a single daffodil it is supposed to bring great misfortune, and no one wants that.

-Calla Lilies: Calla lilies are symbolic of “magnificent beauty” as well as “marriage and purity”. This beautiful and elegant flower emphasizes its simplicity with this basic, yet beautiful, symbolism.

-Gerberas: Gerbera daisies are the classic symbol of beauty and wonder, and can also mean things like: innocence, love, and appreciation, depending on the colour. If you choose white gerbera daisies they represent purity and innocence, while red gerberas represent passion and love, yellow promotes cheerfulness and pink shows appreciation. A beautiful bouquet of these gorgeous flowers would definitely be breaking some of the rules that go along with typical spring weddings, but the beauty they will bring to your wedding is well worth breaking the flower rules.

Summer Weddings:
The summer is a time of brilliance and beauty, so naturally summer weddings typically include bright, bold floral arrangements. However, like spring weddings, you don’t necessarily have to follow this trend. If you use cooler colours you exude a refreshing atmosphere instead; this may be appropriate for evening ceremonies. However, if cooler colours don’t tickle your fancy, you can always stick with the bright and the bold.

Planning a formal wedding? Try centerpieces that include tall vases overflowing with a mix of bold and deep-hued flowers to exude elegance and charm. Want to keep it more casual? Sunflowers are a great way to keep your arrangements simple, but still create an eye-catching centerpiece or even a bouquet. An outdoor wedding? Keep it simple; perhaps try centerpieces that are mason jars with one, or a handful, of daisies in each. Or you could even use potted plants as centerpieces, this way guests would have a party favour to take home with them at the end of the night.

Another helpful tip for summer brides is to create smaller hand-tied bouquets, rather than oversized bouquets. Smaller hand-tied bouquets will last longer in the heat on a hot summer day better than larger, cascading ones.

Popular summer flowers include:
-Carnations: Carnations are found in a wide variety of colours and, as a result, they have a variety of meanings. If you select white carnations they suggest pure love and good luck. Light red carnations represent admiration, while dark red shows deep love and affection. Pink carnations represent a mother’s undying love and are commonly used in Mother’s Day arrangements and bouquets.

-Chrysanthemums: Chrysanthemums represent optimism and joy.

-Hydrangeas: There is some debate over an official meaning about hydrangeas; some people connect it with vanity and boastfulness (perhaps reflecting on its abundance of petals and lavish, roundish shape), but others suggest that it represents anything that is sincerely heartfelt (perhaps the love for your partner?).

-Iris: Irises have come to have a slew of meanings, including: faith, wisdom, cherished friendship, hope, valor, and promise in love.

-Daisies: Like irises, daisies also have multiple meanings, such as: purity, innocence, loyal love, beauty, patience and simplicity.

Fall Weddings:
The fall is a very popular time to get married, with 14% of weddings occurring in September alone, making it the most popular month for weddings. And as per usual, you have probably been advised to adhere to Mother Nature’s palate when it comes to fall weddings and include colours such as red, orange, brown, rust and yellow, but like previously discussed: rules are made to be broken. You don’t necessarily need to stick to these colours, but you will likely want to include some rich fall tones (they are so beautiful, how could you not?). Experiment and use whatever colours you desire, whether they are inline with Mother Nature’s autumn palate, bright and bold or pale pastels.

Popular fall flowers include:
-Chrysanthemums: Chrysanthemums represent optimism and joy.

-Sunflowers: Sunflowers, with their open faces, represent the sun itself, and convey warmth and happiness, as well as adoration and longevity.

-Daisies: Daisies have multiple meanings, such as: purity, innocence, loyal love, beauty, patience and simplicity.

-Roses: Roses have had symbolic meaning since their discovery. Everyone knows that red roses display love, passion, and desire, plus respect and courage. In addition, pink roses denote happiness and gentleness, while white depict reverence, innocence, and purity. Yellow roses promote friendship and joy, and orange roses represent power and enthusiasm. Whatever colour you choose, it seems like roses are a good idea – all colours denote positive and optimistic meanings.

Winter Weddings:
Winter weddings are quite different than any other season; a winter wedding is a great way to do something different and stand out from the typical weddings. If you are having a winter wedding, don’t be afraid to throw some colour into your floral displays, such as red. Red flowers are a great way to emphasize your love for your partner and it boldly stands out against your white winter wonderland. Or you can shy away from bold colours, and try using cream coloured flowers, incorporated with evergreen, pine branches or poinsettias.

Popular winter flowers include:
-Poinsettia: Poinsettias, also known as the Christmas flower, represent good cheer, success and are said to bring wishes of mirth and celebration.

-Holly: Holly represents protection, overcoming anger, and spirituality.

-Camellias: Camellias in general represent devotion, gratitude, and loveliness, with each colour having a specific meaning. Pink camellias mean “longing for you”, red camellias say “you are a flame in my heart”, and white camellias say “you are adorable”.

Now that your wedding date is picked, this article should have (hopefully) assisted you, or at the very least, given you some ideas, about how to go about selecting the type and colour of flowers you want present at your wedding. And don’t forget that just because it is commonly presented in one way, doesn’t mean you can’t turn the idea on its head and create the wedding you always wanted exactly the way you desire. Fulfill your childhood dreams of a Cinderella story.
